Currently the club's senior and junior sections are taking part in training sessions at Culcheth High School, in readiness for the coming season. But they would welcome new members.

    Athletic bounce back to
    lift first silverware

    by Gary Skentelbery
CULCHETH Athletic JFC Under 11's are celebrating their first piece of silverware after a four day tour of the Isle of Mann.
The initial game against the IOM Under 11's Academy Team (equivalent of their national team for the age group) saw a one nil lead, preceded by a penalty miss, finally lead to a 4-1 defeat. The effects of injuries and jet lag influenced the team as they withered in the blazing heat of the evening at a national ground.
Two days later the seven best teams across the Island, each represented by the Academy players, were selected to compete in the eight a side tournament for the magnificent trophy and medals which were collected after a five game unbeaten run.
The Islands top team and Culcheth competed in the final and with goals from Joe Philbin, Gyles Foster and Andrew Lotay saw a three nil rout and the celebration lap of honour led by Captain Tom Estlin who had collected the trophy.
The hosts were magnificent and immediately extended a invitation for next year's tournament.
Coaches Eddy Estlin and Bolo Lotay were both extremely proud of the players throughout the tour with complementary remarks upon the boys behaviour by many islanders.
'We were the better team for more than half the game against Academy,' said Eddy, 'although the final score with two late goals was a little unjust. Neither Bolo or I could fault the lads in the tournament with great passing and movement in each and every game. We were that good we did not concede a single goal. In fact, I think we could teach the England team a thing or two about defending and scoring not to mention entertaining football!

    by Terry Johnson
BUDDING stars of Culcheth Athletic Girls Football Club have been selected for training at Cheshire Centres of Excellence.
The Culcheth Club, run by Nat And Lea Hooper, is riding a boom in girls football.
Huge interest flows from the Womens’ European Championships in the North West last summer and prestigious venues, including Warrington’s Haliwell Jones Stadium, which attracted supporters from all over Europe. Nat is a FA qualified coach and remains a player with a career which includes the famous Manchester United Ladies team.
Culcheth has benefited this year from shirt sponsorship by local construction firm, Lowbury.
Club training takes place at Culcheth High on Tuesday nights and there are presently under-15 and under-13 teams. New players and help from assistant coaches are welcome.
Said Nat: “Women’s football has enjoyed a bigger profile through the smash hit movie, ‘Bend it like Beckham’ and 2.5 million people tuned into BBC 1 to watch the FA Women’s Cup Final”.

    Eagles seek helpers
    by staff reporter

CULCHETH Eagles Youth Rugby based on Shaw Street, Culcheth are desperate for some help.
Culcheth Eagles is a thriving youth rugby club which has some 100 plus young members aged from under 8 years old to 20 years plus. Due to new rules 5 adults are needed to man the pitch during each match.
As Culcheth Eagles has some eight teams playing matches, a number of adults are needed to help. They are also desperate for more help from the community as a whole to help keep the club running.
Club Chairman George Savanage said: "Culcheth has had its fair share of problems with youths and this club is helping to stimulate and train a large number of local children.
"The committee is responsible for raising funds to keep the club running, we do not have many members and are in urgent need for someone to help out as treasurer, either retired accountant or someone with accounting experience."
The club meets monthly for a friendly meeting at the Culcheth Sports Club. Any one who feels they could help out with the youth of Culcheth, please call George on 01925 762407.

The European competition is from June 26 to July 2 while the World Championships are in July.
Jonathan is delighted to have been selected for the Great Britain squad.
But he has a longer term goal - the Olympics - and it was through watching the Olympics on television in 2000 that he became interested in canoeing.
He decided he would like to try and qualify for the Olympics and took up the sport, practising at Warrington's Fordton Lesure Centre.
Canoe coach Mike Patrick saw his potential and took him to Staffordshire for the Canoe Slalom Championships where he had his first taste of whitewater.
When he competes in the European championships in Nottingham he will be up against the best canoeists from more than 20 countries.

    RUGBY LEAGUE

    Rivals united!

    by Gary Skentelbery
TWO rival rugby teams who faced extinction have joined forces and are now pushing for promotion.
Culcheth Eagles Open Age and Leigh Harriers joined forces to form the Broncos Amateur Rugby League Club based at the Grey Horse pub Glazebury - but still playing matches at Shaw Street.
Now the club is thriving and they are looking for promotion at the end of their winter season.
Former Culcheth eagles Chairman Dave Crippin said: "We had been struggling for players in the open age team for a couple of seasons and when we heard that Leigh Harriers, who play in the same league, were folding, it made sense to join forces. "!It was agreed to be based in Glazebury because it is central to Leigh and Culcheth."
Dave said he would particularly like to thank the club's sponsors, The Grey Horse, Pine Products of Leigh and NPH Services North West - "without their support it would be difficult to run a club," he added.
Meanwhile the team is always looking to recruit new players and Dave can be contacted on 01925 762168 or 07939 012026.

    BASKETBALL

    Basketball team
    reaches final

    by our sports staff
CULCHETH High School's Under 14 basketball team is through to the national final at the first time of entering.
They are competing in a round robin competition against three other schools this month to decide which will be the national champions.
The school has a team for every year and the Under 15s were knocked out of the national competition after reaching the last eight.
Under 12, Under 13 and Under 14 teams are all league and cup winners in the Warrington schools competitions. The Under 15s are also league champs.
A school spokeswoman said: "The staff in the PE department have put in a great deal of time and effort to help the boys reach such a high standard.
"At every lunchtime, and often after school there are boys and girls practising in the sports hall. The department has just purchased portable hoops and will soon be taking their passion for the game into the primary schools where they will run coaching sessions."
